Summer arrives this weekend: Solstice occurs at 6:51 AM Saturday

Although meteorological summer began three weeks ago, the summer solstice is this weekend and for many that marks the start of summer. For many of you with kids, summer begins when there school year ends and that’s about now. It’s interesting to me how by the time the summer season begins so much has already happened in nature. I think that’s why I like spring so much better. Spring is […]

Warmer weather ahead, but just briefly

Depending on where you live in the area the first time you hit 90F degrees for the year is somewhere from late May until mid-June. Portland’s average first 90F is June 9th. We have seen 90F readings as early as April (2009) and made it through the entire month of June free of 90F. Back in 2006, we didn’t hit 90F until July 14th. 90F is of course just a […]

Scattered showers and storms today, but better weather for Father’s Day

It’s a mostly cloudy morning and there is still the risk of showers and even a thunderstorm, but the bulk of the day is dry and I wouldn’t cancel any plans. The best chance of showers will be before 5PM and then the risk diminishes after the front goes by. There is still the opportunity for an evening t-storm, so just be aware of the sky and check your favorite […]

Showery afternoon, better Saturday and Sunday, but Watching Potential Spoiler

A rather wet and muggy day is in store for southern and central Maine today as warmer and more humid air to the south attempts to move north and clashes with the cooler marine air now over the region. This is going to be one of those days when it’s just cloudy at times and then you get a downpour and then it’s drizzling and then it’s cloudy again. The […]

Showers and storms the next two days, but the weekend looking better

There won’t be much in the way of sunshine the next two days and Father’s Day is looking great. Those predictions are part of the weather headlines for this morning along with the fact Saturday morning is still a bit questionable. A cool east wind is keeping a rather raw feel to the air around southern Maine today. The heat and humidity well to our south isn’t going to make […]

Some sun, many clouds and a quick shower

It’s a changeable afternoon across the region with an abundance of clouds, some clouds and a few showers. There is also a muggy feel to the air. On balance the day will be a dry one, but there are these showers in the forecast that could occur almost at any time. As I write this there are steadier showers north of Augusta, and these should stay north. It’s impossible to […]

A great beach day is underway

Day 2 of the perfect summer weekend across New England continues with sunshine and pleasantly warm temperatures. It cooled off nicely last evening with morning lows in the 50s and lower 60s. Dew points, that number representing how much moisture is in the air, have been low enough so we don’t feel the moisture and it is remaining comfortable. This will be changing a bit a few times over the […]

El Nino forecast to make a comeback later this summer

This summer the big weather phenomena you will likely be hearing about from your favorite media outlet is El Nino. El Nino which is poised to make a comeback after a hiatus of a few years can impact weather across the entire planet.  Just like this winter’s Polar Vortex, El Nino is a completely normal part of the atmospheric system and has been occurring for millennia.   El Nino occurs […]

    Stellar Sunday of weather

A fantastic day of weather continues with bright sunshine and warm temperatures.  Away from the coast highs will reach the upper 60s and  low 70s and I suspect a even a few mid-70s over interior York County.  The reason for the cooler temperatures at the coast is of course a sea breeze. Today marks the start of a new month and a month with a lot of potential sunshine.  We […]
