Monster ocean storm will graze the coastline

Tonight meteorologists and weather enthusiasts are quite excited to watch the upcoming development of the big ocean storm which will form tomorrow.   You may be wondering what the big deal is about a storm that is more of a miss than a hit and you are certainly justified in that thinking.  However, let me put the size of the storm in perspective.  When we evaluate storms, one of the ways […]

Milder weekend to start, colder finish; watching Monday storm

There’s a term some meteorologists use called “model hugging.” Basically, this means buying those models you hear so much about hook, line and sinker. The thing about the models, they are guides to what will happen in the future, not gospel.     Any model is not 100 percent correct, just ask an economist. When I forecast a storm I certainly review all the models, but ultimately I have to make […]

    Spring finally arrives

Astronomical spring arrives today just before 1PM at 12:57, if you are being precise.  The reason I write astronomical spring is because meteorological spring began 3 weeks ago.   Meteorologists and astronomers see the seasons differently.    For those of us in the weather business, spring is the 90 days between the coldest and warmest 90 days of the year.  Autumn therefore becomes the 90 days of transition between the hottest and […]

Snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain: It’s all about the temperature

Precipitation type is an interesting thing.  There are times you think it’s cold enough for snow and it rains and times you think it’s warm enough for rain and it snows.   To understand they type of precipitation we see here at the ground think about the atmosphere like a layer cake. In the clouds, where precipitation forms is analogous to the top of the cake and the ground where the […]

Snow and snow showers continue much of the day

Welcome back to January.  If the spring weather on Tuesday made you think winter was over, the howling wind and snow showers today will make you think it’s not going to end. The mild air made quite a push westward and most of this storm fell as rain south of a line from north of Sanford to Naples, east through Lewiston/Auburn and on to the midcoast.  For a time last […]

Heavy snow in ski country, rain at coast for a while

As of the mid evening hours a few things have changed.  The rain, as expected, is coming down along the coast.  It’s pushed a bit further inland than expected however.  This means snowfall and sleet totals will be less than expected.  As as result, the winter storm warning was downgraded to a winter weather advisory along the coast up to Rockland.  I suspect areas west of Portland on a line […]

Heavy snow for mountains, mixed bag of precipitation elsewhere

Winter storm warnings are now posted for the foothills of Maine as well as the mountains.  As you head towards the coast, winter weather advisories are posted for a mixed bag of precipitation on the way.  Along the immediate coast, from about Bath southward, there are not advisories for winter weather as the bulk of the storm will be in the form of rain.  That said, there will be some […]

Storm potential still looming for later Wednesday and Thursday

Most of you have heard about the storm for midweek and it’s still on track.  Before it gets here we have a couple of mainly dry days with a mild one for tomorrow. Today will see any clouds clear away and there will be a mix of sunshine and clouds. Highs will surpass freezing in much of southern Maine and make it into the upper 20s in ski country. Overnight […]

After a touch of spring, colder air returns Sunday

I got an email from my Aunt this afternoon showing her and her husband with my parents learning about snowshoeing.  I was thinking, if there was ever a perfect March day to learn how to snowshoe, ski and skate or anything else outside, this was it. The snow became a bit soft this afternoon in the stronger March sunshine as the après-ski season began in earnest.   While I was walking […]
