Windy rainstorm on the way, with limited amounts of mountain snow

A bit of light snow shower activity crossed the area this morning, but this isn’t related to the main storm we have on tap for tonight and much of Wednesday.  I often update changes in the forecast on my twitter account @growingwisdom, so be sure to follow me there. It’s been a very dry fall and you have to go back to June to find a period with a widespread rainstorm […]

January like night ahead, rain and milder by mid-week

What a cold and blustery day it has been.   In case this is your first winter in Maine, it’s not quite normal to have it this cold this early.  Although there are not any records being set around these parts, it’s going to be a very cold night ahead with wind chill readings below zero at times.  When you awake tomorrow morning temperatures will range from the lower teens right […]

Showers end, arctic cold later this weekend, first snow possible next week

A cold batch of rain showers arrived this morning and while not very heavy, they will be with us on and off much of the day. The first round of showers comes from a warm front in the morning while the second batch of showers results from a cold front.   All the showers should be just before the commute home, as roads remain wet much of the day. Across southern […]

Sunshine and milder today, but arctic air coming back

November  2013 has been a rollercoaster month of temperature with 11 days coming in below the average,  8 above and one spot on the normal mark.   Monthly temperatures are often made of wild swings and this can be particularly true in those months that lead us into winter or summer.    I’ll be updating the forecast for the week on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow me there. Feel free to comment […]

Rain ends this morning, spring warmth also ends tonight

"Rainy days and Monday’s always get me down" according to the late great Karen Carpenter, but the sound of rain pelting against the roof is a sound I love. (did I just admit I like the Carpenters?) What makes it an even better sound today is the rain is quite welcome. It won’t be enough to get the ground very wet, but I’ll take it. You might have noticed your […]

Mild start to the work week, but the November chill returns Tuesday

Clouds have moved into the region and you can be sure today will not even come close to Saturday weather-wise. I’ll be updating the forecast for the week on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too. I think it was a good thing the sun sets early this time of year, for if it got dark at 8PM, my 8 hour cleaning […]

Mild weekend with sunshine before showers and colder air

Welcome to the weekend.  Of course, you must get through today, but Friday’s are part of the weekend in my mind and it’s time to think about unwinding after a long week.   It’s hard to imagine in two weeks it will be "black Friday" and many of you will be having Turkey sandwiches for lunch.    This time of year the focus of the weather forecast changes.  In the summer […]

Cold won’t last long as weekend temperatures turn milder

Well, you knew it was going to be cold this morning.  Portland is in the upper teens for its coldest morning since late last winter.  The good news is that the cold isn’t going to last more than another 24 hours with milder air poised to move northward late this week and into the weekend.  Below are some other readings as of 6AM this morning. The dry air over us […]

Early snow squalls usher in coldest air of fall

Winter doesn’t arrive until December, but it’s going to feel like the 12th month for a couple of days ahead.  Yes indeed, for many of you some snow is going to be in the air tomorrow for the first time this season.  The ground could turn white tomorrow morning in spots, but most of the roads should remain wet, not white.  I’ll be updating the forecast for the snow and […]
