Mild and windy, then temperatures plummet 40 degrees by Monday

Today we are watching a very strong cold front to our west.  The air on the back side of this front is basically from the north pole.  For some areas in the Midwest, this is the coldest air in nearly 4 years.  Here in Maine, we will experience three days of what I will  call significant cold.  This is the type of air that will be very dry and cold […]

Brief cold today, extended cold next week

After our small snow event earlier this week a blast of typical January cold is greeting Mainers today. Temperatures are running close to 20 below zero in the far north to near 10 along coastal areas around Portland and points south.  These temperatures are not unusual and not even close to record cold.  In Portland, back in 1971, it was 22 below zero on this date and the record for […]

Snow through the afternoon with several inches

Another small snowstorm for Maine today with several inches of snow that will be plowable for some places and give southern Maine back its snow cover.  This is great news, as we have a blast of very cold air for next week and bare ground with sub-zero temperatures can cause damage to pipes and plants. Even two inches of snow can insulate the ground quite nicely.  If you are a […]

A bit of snow for Wednesday

A small snowstorm is headed for Maine and will begin by sunrise Wednesday. This storm will ride along a very tight temperature contrast that is just to our south. On Monday, Portland nearly hit 60F and shattered the former high temperature for the day.  As a cold front moved through yesterday temperatures were brought back to levels more typical of January, but still not very cold. Now, warmer air will try […]

Still no major cold or snow in sight

This morning we find fog advisories from Maine to the Carolinas.  This is quite unusual to see nearly the entire east coast covered in fog.  The reason for this is that warm air is riding up the coast and moving over the cold air and in some cases, snow at the surface.  Additionally, there is very little wind to mix things up so the air becomes stuck and the fog […]

A bit of ice then a mild weekend followed by sinking temperatures

There is good news and bad news this weekend for winter sports enthusiasts. We will have very mild air over the region both Saturday and Sunday. I expect many towns in southern Maine to exceed 50F for a real January treat. Even in ski country the snow will soften in the afternoon for some marginally spring like conditions. That is the good news, the bad news is that two days […]

Old Man Winter Takes a Nap

It’s a cold morning across much of Maine with temperatures in the single digits and teens in places from Waterville to Wells.  While this is certainly cold, it’s not out of the ordinary and by this afternoon many of these same spots will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s.  This trend of milder afternoons, which started yesterday, will continue through the weekend.   Later today a weak front […]

January Thaw For Maine, But Winter Isn’t Done

They don’t happen every year, but they are, for many, a welcome break from the cold.  While this hasn’t been a blockbuster winter, we have seen close to normal snowfall in much of the state and above normal snowfall across the mountains and parts of coastal Maine including Portland.  Overall in December, temperatures were milder than expected until just before Christmas, but have been typically cold  since and into the […]

Snow ends this morning, warming trend on the way

A weak system is leaving the area this morning and brought a quick round of snow showers with minimal accumulation. There was not much in the way of snow totals as this system is starved for moisture. As the system leaves the area a quick shot of colder air will move through and temperatures will be slightly below normal Monday. After this shot of cold air moves east, temperatures will […]
