Moderating cold during a quiet weather week

After a stormy few weeks the weather takes a calm turn for the upcoming period with the cold relaxing by the weekend.  Our weather will be dominated by the drier more northern jet stream the next week and as that lifts further north milder air will also ensue.  You may not realize that there are often several jet streams that circle the planet as various levels.  The two jet streams […]

    Quick hitting significant snowstorm overnight

Snow is breaking out across New England this afternoon and will quickly overspread the area this evening.  This is going to be a fast hitting but potent storm with 6-8 inches of new snow across south and central coastal areas.  There will be even more snow east of Rockland where 8-15 inches of new snow will fall overnight. Winter storm warnings are up for the areas in pink in the […]

    More snow overnight tonight

Another fast moving storm is headed for Maine.  A storm now located around the mid-Atlantic region will rapidly intensify as it moves up the coastline and past Maine early Sunday.  This storm will bring a swath of snow to the area overnight.  The snow will end rapidly early in the morning in southern Maine and should be over in the  Portland  area between 4 AM and 6AM.  Further east the snow […]

Major winter storm continues for much of day

As of this morning the entire state of Maine has seen at least some snow with many areas poised to receive over a foot before this ends later this afternoon and early evening. I would say Portland has now received its permanent snow cover for the winter.   I had a report from Saco that they have gotten over half a foot as of 8 AM.  Right now our storm […]

Big storm to bring mountain snow and coastal rain and wind

If you have been seeing the news the past day you know weather has been making headlines all across the deep south and into the Ohio valley. Tornadoes and blizzard conditions occurred simultaneously from Texas to Alabama and north into Michigan. This same storm will have a big impact on Maine’s weather the next 24 hours bringing snow, sleet and rain to the region. I’d love to hear from you […]

Large storm to impact Maine Wednesday night and Thursday

A major storm is about to impact Maine with wind, snow and some rain.  Currently, the center of low pressure that will impact our area is still in the deep south. During Wednesday this storm will lift north and eventually move up the coastline as a strong nor’easter.  There is a big temperature contrast with this storm.  Very warm and humid air will be moving north while bitter cold air […]

A Christmas flurry, big snow possible Wednesday night and Thursday

It looks like much of coastal Maine will not end up white this year as any Christmas accumulating snow stays to our south.  There could be some flurries Christmas morning that make it look rather festive but sunshine will return for the afternoon with cold temperatures and dry roads.  The reason we won’t see any significant snow from this storm is that it will  track too far to our south. […]

A bit of snow for late Christmas eve

There is something magical about a Christmas snowfall, even a small one and for extreme southern Maine there will likely at least be some snow in the air Christmas morning.  We have a small and very weak system that will cross the area late tomorrow night and exit early Christmas morning.  I hesitate to even use the word "storm" with this event.  The system is coming from the west and […]

White Christmas still possible for parts of coast

Ten years ago you may remember Portland and much of Maine had a major snowstorm in the closing hours of Christmas.  By the time the snow stopped on the 26th over a foot of snow had fallen in the Forest City.   While that was certainly the biggest Christmas snowstorm it did not set a record for the most snow on the ground on Christmas, that honor is reserved for […]
