First snow of the season for some overnight and Sunday

Snow!  Yes that’s right; some snow will fall overnight and into the first part of Sunday as a warm front comes through the area.  There is an area of rain and snow that will be breaking out overnight and bring the first accumulating snow to the higher elevations of Maine and New Hampshire.  Areas closer to the coast could see a few wet flakes mixed in with any rain showers, […]

    Chilly and mostly dry weekend

Much of southern Maine missed out on the rain yesterday as our dry spell remains firmly entrenched.  Temperatures ended up reaching the lower 60s in many spots during the first part of Thursday before falling back in the afternoon.  The reason for the dramatic drop in readings was a cold front that pushed offshore. For the next couple of days our air will be cool and dry originating up in […]

Milder air on the way, no big storms in sight

Mild air will return to southern Maine the next couple of days with highs reaching back into the 50s this afternoon and near 60F for Thursday.  After the recent cold snap, the air will feel even milder. There is a good bet of a round of showers Thursday as a cold front crosses the region.   I’ll be updating the forecast for the week on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow […]

A cold morning, but sunshine abounds this afternoon

A  cold morning to say the least is underway.  Fryeburg as I write this is down in the upper teens for a solid freeze and a hard ground.  In spite of nearly 100% sunshine, it will take many hours for temperatures to get into the 40’s today.     From about 11 AM to 4PM will be anywhere from 38-44F.   Once the sun goes down well before 5PM, temperatures […]

Halloween showers, strong Friday winds and a Sunday sunrise eclipse

Here comes the wind.  We haven’t had a real weather event around here in months.   Perhaps some big thunderstorms over the summer or some heavy rain in late August, but in general it has been smooth sailing for a while.  Tomorrow is going to be a wild and windy day, but before we get there, let’s get the kids out and back safe and dry this evening. A flow of […]

Various weather changes for Game 6, Halloween and the start of November

Clouds greet Mainers this morning as a weak disturbance moves through the area.    When meteorologists use the word disturbance, not storm, it’s usually a change in wind direction and speed some level above 10,000 feet causing the issue.  Today’s "disturbance" is moving by at around 18,000 feet.   If you want to discuss weather, climate or gardening or even education please find me on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow […]

Sunny Sunday and warming up later this week

After some light rain last night our Sunday is turning out to be a wonderful late October day.  This is of course the last Sunday in October and as such, the last Sunday of daylight saving time 2013.  Next Sunday, it will be dark by 5PM, a sign that winter is closing in rapidly. Although the light will be shrinking further this week, temperatures will actually be rising.  I am […]

Last weekend of daylight saving time brings sunshine

This is the last full weekend of daylight saving time and it appears that will see a lot of sunshine, but not without some clouds and a slim chance of showers.  We set the clock back next Sunday morning for that wonderful night when we get an extra hour of sleep. This area of mainly clear skies extends back the Midwest and means sunshine and clear skies will also be […]

Chilly afternoon here, cool night for the World Series

It’s a chilly afternoon across southern Maine and the feel of late fall is certainly evident.  This time of year we can flip from mild to cold in a matter of hours. Game 1 of the World Series starts tonight and even if you’re not a fan of baseball, you can’t help but know this is a big deal for Boston and all of Red Sox Nation.  This is the […]
