    Rainy Friday, but sunny Saturday

Rain is hugging the coast this morning with showers scattered across inland sections. If you showed me the weather from this morning, without temperatures, I would easily guess it was the middle of winter.  A winter-like storm is moving northward from near Cape Cod and will be east of Portland later today. This setup leaves much of the area on the cool and wet side of the storm and makes […]

    Coastal storm to impact Maine

What a great morning across the area.  Cool, crisp and with sunshine.  This is the kind of weather I love in July.  In looking at the weather maps this morning, I am feeling a need to sharpen my winter forecasting skills.  It’s not because it’s cooler and there is a touch of fall in the air, rather because we have an east coast storm to watch and all the same […]

Drier air heading for Maine, forecast challenges for Friday

Some thick fog and low clouds greeted Mainers this morning and the air feels quite thick with humidity.  The good news is that drier air is poised to move into the region during the day and by sunset the air will have a crispness to it we have not felt in a while.  There are some challenges to the forecast beyond today and especially later tomorrow evening and Friday.   […]

Heavy morning rain, more PM showers.

Very heavy rain is moving through southern Maine this morning.  The heaviest rain is falling across the foothills and the lakes region.   Some of these areas could see 1 to 2 inches of rain this morning as torrential downpours move through. There is a flood watch in effect because of the possibility of flash flooding.  Any flooding that occurs would be of the street or small stream variety. The rain […]

A bit more humidity on the way

If you asked someone about the weather so far this summer, they might tell you about the humidity.   While records for the amount of humidity in the air are not easily obtained, anecdotally, it seems like it’s been much more humid for a longer period of time this summer than we are use to. I’ll be updating the details of the weather on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow me there. […]

Saturday’s storms will finally bring relief

Cold snaps and heat waves have their peaks and today is the peak of this heat wave.  Temperatures this afternoon are going to hit 100F in a few spots and get into the upper 90s in many.  When you combine the heat and the humidity, today will be the most uncomfortable day of the summer.   Although the coast hasn’t had an official heat wave, some inland areas have been […]

Heat and humidity continue into weekend

Thunderstorms are crossing into western Maine and could give some areas a quick downpour with some vivid lightning.  The heat wave continued inland today, but coastal areas stayed in the 80s.  Portland only reached the mid-80s with oppressive humidity.  The inland heat has been particularly intense with many areas seeing their 4th day in a row at or over 90F.   I was watering some containers outside earlier and thinking […]

    Beach weather continues into weekend

Portland and surrounding communities reached and exceeded the 90 degree mark yesterday.  It appears likely many areas will reach the lower 90s again today, especially just a few miles inland.   This morning you should notice slightly drier air across the region.  It’s not that there isn’t humidity, it’s just that the level is less than yesterday at this time.  During the afternoon it’s going to feel hot again and […]

    Short break from the humidity

A cool northeast wind greeted Mainers this morning, a welcome change from the fog and high moisture of Thursday.  The breeze will continue much of the morning with temperatures struggling to reach the 70s along the coast.  There will be some periods of sunshine, but a lot of clouds as well.   While this won’t be a great beach day, it will still be a good afternoon to get outside […]
