No big snow again this weekend, so what about the rest of winter?

Weather is highly variable from place to place and of all the weather variables snow is one of the least consistent. Depending on where you are in New England this winter your total snow thus far could be within an inch of normal or as much as 66% below normal. It is becoming more evident that the winter of 2012-2013 is not going to be a blockbuster snowy one. However, […]

Wind and rain this morning, clearing this afternoon

Howling winds kept temperatures at spring-like levels all night.   Portland and most of Maine have seen temperatures in the 50s since late yesterday afternoon.  Last night, I was able to turn off the heat and sleep with the windows wide open.   This extreme weather in January gets all sorts of mixed reactions for sure, I personally love the break. I actually left several of my plants that were […]

Warmer weather to bring rain and gusty winds

Temperatures are now into the 40s across most of southern Maine and will be heading even higher.  Dense fog is still an issue especially over some of the inland valleys.  Our warm temperatures will even get warmer overnight as many spots will rise to near 50F!  I expect much of the light snow cover along the coastal plane to be gone by morning.  The other piece to our weather story […]

Deep freeze breaks with a fast moving messy weather system

AFTERNOON UPDATE: Snow is now falling across much of southern Maine and will spread northward this afternoon. Already the roads are becoming slippery from Sanford to Windham and into Portland.  The green areas below on the radar show the heavier bands of snow as of about 3 PM this afternoon.  These bands will continue to move north for the rest of the day. As I was walking across the campus […]

Some snow before it turns milder next week

If you remember last weekend it was quite mild.  During Sunday several places reached 50F.  Later that evening, the temperature fell below 32F.  Since then we have been in the deep freeze.  A week of temperatures at or below zero at night while certainly not unprecedented hasn’t happened in several years. The cold weather has been difficult for those who need to be outside for work. The frost has gone […]

Cold hangs tough, but worst is almost over

The core of the cold snap is now cresting over southern Maine and temperatures this afternoon rose to the middle and upper teens over southern areas and approached 10F to the north.  As night falls clouds will melt away and this will allow temperatures to fall once again to sub-zero readings.  Temperatures last night fell below zero from Portland to Augusta. Even southern York County saw temperatures of one degree […]

Coldest of the cold for the next twenty-four hours

January is typically the coldest month across the area and today may very well end up as the coldest day of the winter.  Arctic air is now firmly entrenched.  Wind chill warnings and advisories are posted for areas away from the coast.  Warnings are posted when wind chills can be as cold at 48 below zero. Advisories are posted for wind chills as low as 23 below zero.   I’ll […]

Most of snow to stay over ocean and not impact coast

We knew this would be a tough forecast and it is proving to be true.  The latest computer models I use are keeping the heaviest bands of snow east of the region and therefore I have lowered the expected snow amounts.    I’ll be updating the situation on Twitter at @growingwisdom. This doesn’t mean there won’t be any snow. I am still looking at a dusting to a few inches […]

Mild and windy, then temperatures plummet 40 degrees by Monday

Today we are watching a very strong cold front to our west.  The air on the back side of this front is basically from the north pole.  For some areas in the Midwest, this is the coldest air in nearly 4 years.  Here in Maine, we will experience three days of what I will  call significant cold.  This is the type of air that will be very dry and cold […]
