Winter 2013-2014 current trends, discussion and forecast

December is off to a chilly and slippery start with icy roads in places the past few mornings. Meteorological winter began December 1st and ends February 28th. Those 90 days are the coldest of the year.  For much of the country, the months of December, January and February also provide the bulk of snowfall for the winter season. If you live in a cold climate, you want to know the […]

Slick travel again overnight and into Tuesday morning

Another night of a lot of moisture will combine with temperatures falling at or below freezing to make for slick morning conditions in some areas.  The foothills and mountains will certainly have icy roads, but the air may cool enough to give slippery conditions right to the coast. I’ll be updating the forecast for the week on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask […]

Icy travel around capitol district this morning

A weak boundary of mild and cold air will be hanging around southern Maine this morning.  This contrast in temperature will provide enough lift to give parts of the area  sleet, freezing rain and rain.  In areas away from the coast below freezing travel will can be difficult on untreated surfaces.  The icy roads have already caused numerous accidents and traffic issues and this can continue well through the […]

Very cold morning starts a chilly Saturday

While today is going to be a very cold day, winds will be light and with abundant sunshine it won’t be such a bad day. In summer we talk about humidity as the variable that makes us feel uncomfortable during the summer, in winter, it’s the wind, winds will be almost non-existent all day. Most areas will remain in the 20s the bulk of the day with a few areas […]

Heavy rain, mild air and wind followed by cold and dry for the holiday

Accidents on the Maine Turnpike again this morning as a windswept rain continues across Maine.  Even in ski country the snow is changing to rain as very mild air streams north from the tropics.  There are flood watches up for much of the area with warnings and advisories for the wind.    While most of the precipitation will fall as rain, but there will be some snow on the western […]

Windy rainstorm on the way, with limited amounts of mountain snow

A bit of light snow shower activity crossed the area this morning, but this isn’t related to the main storm we have on tap for tonight and much of Wednesday.  I often update changes in the forecast on my twitter account @growingwisdom, so be sure to follow me there. It’s been a very dry fall and you have to go back to June to find a period with a widespread rainstorm […]

January like night ahead, rain and milder by mid-week

What a cold and blustery day it has been.   In case this is your first winter in Maine, it’s not quite normal to have it this cold this early.  Although there are not any records being set around these parts, it’s going to be a very cold night ahead with wind chill readings below zero at times.  When you awake tomorrow morning temperatures will range from the lower teens right […]

Showers end, arctic cold later this weekend, first snow possible next week

A cold batch of rain showers arrived this morning and while not very heavy, they will be with us on and off much of the day. The first round of showers comes from a warm front in the morning while the second batch of showers results from a cold front.   All the showers should be just before the commute home, as roads remain wet much of the day. Across southern […]

Sunshine and milder today, but arctic air coming back

November  2013 has been a rollercoaster month of temperature with 11 days coming in below the average,  8 above and one spot on the normal mark.   Monthly temperatures are often made of wild swings and this can be particularly true in those months that lead us into winter or summer.    I’ll be updating the forecast for the week on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow me there.
