Author Stephen King and a slate of major contributors to the Maine Democratic Party will host a fundraiser Monday for gubernatorial candidate U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, according to an invitation obtained by the Sunlight Foundation.
King, who recently hosted a fundraiser for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Shenna Bellows, will headline the event for Michaud, which will be held at the Port City Music Hall in Portland. The current host list is comprised of prominent Democratic donors, although some of them have already contributed the maximum $3,000 to Michaud's campaign committee, including King. Nonetheless, the current host list could prompt other Democratic donors to join the ranks of maxed out Michaud donors.
Tickets to the evening event begin at $100 for guest-level entry and climb to $1,000 for a VIP host designation, which includes a signed King novel.
The fundraiser follows the decision by the Michaud campaign to go up with a biographical television ad this week. An August ad run is a bit early for a Maine campaign, but underscores the current status of the race. Polls, including one commissioned by the Portland Press Herald, show Michaud a few percentage points ahead of Republican Gov. Paul LePage, but his lead has been within the margin of error of several recent surveys. Independent Eliot Cutler, who continues to lag in third place, has insisted that he is positioned for the kind of late surge that he made in 2010, when he finished a close second to LePage.
