Cutler goes for drama as he challenges LePage and Michaud to debate

The stage was set. The podium on the left, naturally, was labeled for Democrat Mike Michaud. On the right, a sign for Republican Gov. Paul LePage. Independent candidate Eliot Cutler stood in the middle, ready to debate his two opponents. The only problem? It wasn’t a real debate. It was the latest attempt by the Cutler campaign to draw attention to the fact that the election is less than 100 […]

New poll, same (mostly) story for Maine race for governor

The Portland-based Maine Peoples Resource Center released a poll Monday showing that the race for the Blaine House remains a statistical dead heat with less than 100 days left before Election Day. The automated telephone poll of 796 likely voters showed Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud leading Republican Gov. Paul LePage by less than two points, 42.6 percent to 41.4 percent, while independent Eliot Cutler is a distant third at […]

Maine’s 2nd District hopefuls oppose GOP lawsuit against Obama

None of the candidates for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District seat support a proposed lawsuit against President Barack Obama, a move backed by the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives. On Wednesday, House Republicans authorized the suit along party lines, accusing Obama of abuse of power. It hasn’t moved forward in court, but it is motivated by the president’s delay of provisions in the Affordable Care Act, the health care law that Republicans have long fought. […]

Did Bellows receive a ‘unanimous’ endorsement from the AFL-CIO? Yes — and no

Democrat Shenna Bellows’ statement that she received a “unanimous” endorsement from a major labor union is drawing criticism from Republicans in the latest battle for the “working class” vote. But as so frequently happens in politics, where things are rarely as black or white as campaigns portray them, there’s an element of truth in both sides’ claims. Republicans’ latest salvo against Bellows – who is running to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins – […]

Republican claim about Michaud, VA bill news coverage inaccurate

Always read the fine print — It’s an age-old rule. On Wednesday, in the case of a salvo from Gov. Paul LePage’s chief political strategist, the lesson may be to read all of the print, especially if you’re relying on it to slam a political opponent. Washington, D.C. consultant Brent Littlefield, who shapes strategy for the governor’s re-election campaign, fired off a press statement assailing the conspicuous absence of Representative Michael […]

DNC Chair: Pingree wins ‘most unique commute’ award

Before Monday’s Democratic rally for Maine women, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and her family spent Sunday evening at Rep. Chellie Pingree’s home on North Haven. Schultz not only got a taste of lobsters, but the Floridian also a taste of what it’s like to commute from North Haven in quintessential Maine weather. The small island community of about 355 resident is located 12 miles off Rockland. In her opening […]

Report: Eliot Cutler says Maine Dems asked him to represent the party in 2014. Dems: Not true

Was Independent Eliot Cutler the Maine Democratic Party’s preferred candidate to take on Gov. Paul LePage in 2014? The Seacoast online article does not include any Democratic response. Maine Democratic Party  Chairman Ben Grant denied Cutler’s statement […]
