Same old Sox

Clearing the Bases

Back from four days on an island to watch the Red Sox total three hits and no runs Saturday night … so I see a lot has changed with the Boston Nine (except for Felix Doubront going to the bullpen, and other pitching spots up in the air .. .and, of course continued speculation about Mookie Betts).

Boston (36-44) is now 8 games back in the AL East and now 7 back in the Wild Card standings.

The Red Sox need offense and, meanwhile, Betts (.322) was 0-for-2 with Pawtucket, but with two walks. His on-base percentage is .425.

Pawtucket starter Allen Webster (4-4, 2.92) threw a gem: 7 2/3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 9 K.

Portland starter Brian Johnson (7-1, 1.67) was wild (four walks) but still threw five solid innings: 5 H, 1 R, 7 K … Kerry De La Cruz (.318) was 5-for-6 and Peter Hissey (.284) 3-for-6.

Greenville’s Carlos Asuaje (.306) hit his ninth home run.
