Red Sox among leaders (for draft position); historic Sea Dogs come home

After their eighth straight loss Sunday, the Boston Red Sox dropped to 56-74. Boston is positioning itself nicely – for the 2015 draft. Boston has the fifth-worst record, behind Texas (50-79), Colorado (52-77), Arizona (55-76) and Houston (55-76).

In the months-long tryout for next year’s rotation, Allen Webster (3-2, 5.81) did himself no favors, going only 4 1/3 innings: 8 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 5 K.

Pawtucket (74-62) lost in 12 innings to Buffalo and is now tied with the Bisons for the wild card spot in the International League … Anthony Ranaudo (2.61 ERA) went 6 1/3 innings:  7 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 3 K … Bryce Brentz (.240) hit his 11th home run and both Garin Cecchini (.257) and Dan Butler (.239) had three hits … Jackie Bradley Jr. (.200) was 1-for-6.

Luis Diaz (3.86) pitched six shutout innings for the Sea Dogs: 4 H, 1 BB, 4 K. Portland won 5-0, led by Mike Miller (3-for-4, .328) and Sean Coyle (2-for-3, .303)

The Sea Dogs return to Portland today for an 8-game home stand to close out the regular season. The Sea Dogs have a chance for history and first place. See today’s column.

Infielder Carlos Asuaje (.333) had five hits for Salem in a doubleheader … Outfielder Manual Margot (.333) has two hits and two walks, upping his OPS to .924.

Trey Ball (4-10, 4.98 ERA_ pitched six innings for Greenville: 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. In his last 10 starts, Ball is 3-3 (3.02) … Sam Travis (.275) hit his third home runs in 20 games. His OPS is .801.
