The Red Sox kids came through

Clearing the Bases

When Brock Holt doubled in Alex Hassan and Jackie Bradley Jr., and later when Garin Cecchini doubled in Holt, it marked a special time for the Boston Red Sox player development office.

Their kids were coming through.

Add to the group Rookie of the Year candidate Xander Bogaerts, along with new starting pitchers Brandon Workman and Rubby De La Rosa, and you have a nice gathering of young players.

Not all of them will contribute all year. Cecchini is already headed back to Triple-A and Hassan's time is likely limited. But this Boston club is benefiting from the extra dose of energy.

See today's column for more.

With their seventh straight win, Boston is 27-29, still six games behind Toronto.

John Lackey (6-3) goes for Boston tonight in Cleveland (Justin Masterson 2-4).

Pawtucket starter Anthony Ranaudo (3.09 ERA) went five innings on Sunday: 5 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 4 K).

Sea Dogs shortstop Deven Marrero (.265) keeps showing enough offense, going 3-for-5 with his 15th double ... Mookie Betts (.355) was 0-for-4 with a walk.

Former Sea Dogs infielder Ryan Dent re-signed with the Red Sox this year, but was assigned to Class A Salem. Dent (.270) may be itching to move up, going 5-for-6 on Sunday ... Reed Gragnani (.341) was 2-for-3.

The Sea Dogs are off tonight and return to Hadlock Field on Tuesday.
