Try to figure Red Sox out

Clearing the Bases

So the struggling Red Sox offense totaled 15 hits and six runs. Slumping Daniel Nava went 3-for-4 with a walk. Boston had ace Jon Lester on the mound.

And the Red Sox lost.

Lester (6-7, 3.52) allowed 12 hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings. Reliever Edward Mujica (6.65 ERA) was the only Boston pitcher not to allow a run.

You try figuring out this Boston team.

Don't know how long ESPN will want the Red Sox on its Sunday Night baseball, but Boston plays Detroit at 8 p.m.

Pawtucket's Matt Barnes (2-4, 4.69) won: 6 2/3 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K ... Both Travis Shaw (.280) and Christian Vazquez (.271) had two hits ... Mookie Betts (.286) was 0-3 with a walk.

A couple of unheralded Sea Dogs had three hits apiece: Michel Brenly (.317) tripled and doubled twice; Derrik Gibson (.290) was 3-for-5 ... Blake Swihart (.293) had a triple.

The Sea Dogs finish their home stand at 1 p.m. today.

Today's column looks at how long the Red Sox kept Lester and Clay Buchholz in Portland, and what they might do with Henry Owens.
