Some quick thoughts after Patriots second preseason game

Well, that was something, wasn’t it? No, I’m not talking about the play of the Patriots three quarterbacks in their 42-35 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles Friday night – although Messieurs Brady, Garoppolo and Mallett were pretty impressive (21-of-33 combined, 245 yards, four touchdown passes) – I’m talking about the penalty flags. Too many. Twenty-one penalties for 169 yards were accepted in the game. (And it boggles my mind […]

Rainy days, galoshes, open practice and TMI

So it rained Wednesday. Really hard. Just what the New England Patriots needed. The Patriots held their joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles as scheduled – okay, five hours earlier than it was originally scheduled – in the rain and the wind. As Tom Brady said afterward,  “It was kind of a New England-type day. We had a bunch of these last year, and really for the most part the […]

    The Butler keeps doing it

Undrafted rookie cornerback Malcolm Butler continues to be one of the headliners of the Patriots training camp. Coming off an outstanding performance in last Thursday’s opening preseason game, when he had six tackles and defended two passes in the red zone, Butler opened some eyes when he intercepted a Tom Brady pass intended for Kenbrell Thompkins in Monday’s practice. Earlier, Bill Belichick addressed Butler’s training camp in his press conference, […]

Pats camp days coming to an end

A little of this and a little of that for you today: – The Patriots open training camp practices come to an end this week with a pair of joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles. Both are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and run until about 4:30 p.m. The Patriots play the Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Gillette in their second preseason game. I would expect the […]

Quick thoughts on Patriots preseason loss to Washington

As several of my colleagues noted tonight throughout the Patriots 23-6 loss to Washington, jobs aren’t won in the first preseason game, but they sure can be lost. Several of the young players looking to make an impression on Bill Belichick may have Thursday night – but in a bad way. Fumbles, missed tackles, misplays. Roy Finch, an undrafted rookie running back, has plenty of moves. But he fumbled a […]

    Brady, pygmies and Big Vince

Tom Brady had yet another good joint practice against Washington on Tuesday as the teams prepare for their Thursday night preseason opener. And once again he spoke about how much the team was getting out of these joint practices. Tuesday’s lasted over three hours. “Well, we got a ton of reps,” he said. “Yesterday we got about 80 or 90 reps.Today was probably pretty similar. Typically you don’t get that […]

It’s Monday. Do you know where your Patriots are?

They would be in Virginia, of course, preparing for their first preseason game with Washington on Thursday. The Patriots are holding joint practices with Washington through Wednesday, and apparently a lot of their fans followed them. According to media tweets coming out of Richmond, Va., where Washington practices, the cheers are quite loud every time Tom Brady completed a pass against the Washington defense – which was often. While preseason […]

A couple of thoughts for a rainy Monday

The New England Patriots have the day off Monday. No practice. Time to rest up after what sounded like a fast and furious weekend. So that gives us some time to think about a couple of the early storylines in camp. – Don’t be surprised if a rookie starts somewhere on the offensive line this year. The Patriots invested heavily in the offensive line in the draft, selecting center Bryan […]

Lots of learning for UMaine’s Johnson on Day 1 of Training Camp

Some thoughts from Day One of the New England Patriots training camp: Former University of Maine wide receiver Derrick Johnson had a busy day. In addition to running all the drills with wide receivers, he was running around with the special teams units as well. He knows it’s good to show versatility if he wants to earn one of the 53 roster spots this fall. “I did a lot of […]
