Patriots trade Mankins – one of the all-time greats, according to Belichick

Bill Belichick has never been sentimental. In his position, you can’t afford to be. So while the trade of left guard Logan Mankins – a six-time Pro Bowl selection -from the New England Patriots to Tampa Bay for second-year tight end Tim Wright was stunning on Tuesday, it probably shouldn’t have been surprising. The Patriots need a tight end who can play in the slot and stretch the field. Wright, […]

Garoppolo to start Patriots final preseason game

It is interesting to see that rookie Jimmy Garoppolo has been named the Patriots starting quarterback for their final preseason game, Thursday at the New York Giants. ESPN’s Adam Schefter also noted that Garoppolo is expected to play most of the game. What is equally interesting is that the Patriots, known for keeping everything close to the vest, would release this information three days before the game. What does it […]

Quick thoughts from Patriots 30-7 preseason win over Carolina

The New England Patriots were pretty impressive in beating the Carolina Panthers 30-7 Friday night, weren’t they? So here’s some quick thoughts on what went down at Gillette Stadium: – Bill Belichick is always, always trying to prepare his players for any situation. So on the Patriots third offensive series of the game, with 5:33 left in the first quarter, he sent Ryan Mallett in at quarterback instead of Tom […]

    Patriots second-most valuable NFL franchise

Forbes Magazine, which likes to list all things financial, came out with its NFL franchise values this week. And, no surprise, the New England Patriots are worth a lot. The Patriots were ranked second on Forbes list, with a franchise value of $2.6 billion. They had revenues of $428 million in 2013, with an operating income of $147 million. The Dallas Cowboys topped the list, valued at $3.2 billion. Only […]

Some quick thoughts after Patriots second preseason game

Well, that was something, wasn’t it? No, I’m not talking about the play of the Patriots three quarterbacks in their 42-35 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles Friday night – although Messieurs Brady, Garoppolo and Mallett were pretty impressive (21-of-33 combined, 245 yards, four touchdown passes) – I’m talking about the penalty flags. Too many. Twenty-one penalties for 169 yards were accepted in the game. (And it boggles my mind […]

Rainy days, galoshes, open practice and TMI

So it rained Wednesday. Really hard. Just what the New England Patriots needed. The Patriots held their joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles as scheduled – okay, five hours earlier than it was originally scheduled – in the rain and the wind. As Tom Brady said afterward,  “It was kind of a New England-type day. We had a bunch of these last year, and really for the most part the […]

    The Butler keeps doing it

Undrafted rookie cornerback Malcolm Butler continues to be one of the headliners of the Patriots training camp. Coming off an outstanding performance in last Thursday’s opening preseason game, when he had six tackles and defended two passes in the red zone, Butler opened some eyes when he intercepted a Tom Brady pass intended for Kenbrell Thompkins in Monday’s practice. Earlier, Bill Belichick addressed Butler’s training camp in his press conference, […]

Pats camp days coming to an end

A little of this and a little of that for you today: – The Patriots open training camp practices come to an end this week with a pair of joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles. Both are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and run until about 4:30 p.m. The Patriots play the Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Gillette in their second preseason game. I would expect the […]

Quick thoughts on Patriots preseason loss to Washington

As several of my colleagues noted tonight throughout the Patriots 23-6 loss to Washington, jobs aren’t won in the first preseason game, but they sure can be lost. Several of the young players looking to make an impression on Bill Belichick may have Thursday night – but in a bad way. Fumbles, missed tackles, misplays. Roy Finch, an undrafted rookie running back, has plenty of moves. But he fumbled a […]
